Padang Merdeka, located in the heart of Kuching, Sarawak, is a historic and cultural landmark that has evolved over time to become a central hub for community activities and events.
Originally known as the Kuching Recreational Ground in the late 19th century, it was designed as a green space for residents, featuring flowers, trees, a Chinese-style pavilion, and play areas for children. Over the years, it transitioned into a sports field and was later referred to as the police ground due to daily drills conducted by the police force. In 2003, it was officially named Padang Merdeka, symbolizing its significance in Sarawak’s journey towards self-governance.
